Overview :

The APC SCL500RM1UC is a compact line-interactive rackmount uninterruptible power supply (UPS) designed to provide regulated power protection for small IT infrastructure, network equipment, and edge deployments installed in shallow racks. It is typically deployed by network administrators and infrastructure engineers who require reliable power continuity in telecom cabinets, branch office racks, or edge computing environments where rack depth is limited.

The UPS provides 500VA / 400W output capacity with pure sine wave output, ensuring compatibility with sensitive electronics and devices using active-PFC power supplies. Its line-interactive topology incorporates Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) to correct undervoltage or overvoltage conditions without switching immediately to battery operation. This helps maintain stable output voltage and extend battery lifespan during fluctuating utility power conditions. The system operates on 120V AC infrastructure with an input voltage operating range of 92–139V, using a NEMA 5-15P input connector.

For device connectivity, the UPS provides four NEMA 5-15R battery-backup outlets, allowing direct connection of network switches, routers, small servers, or rack-mounted appliances. Transfer time between utility power and battery operation typically ranges from 6–10 milliseconds, ensuring minimal disruption to connected devices during power disturbances.

The SCL500RM1UC belongs to the Smart-UPS Lithium-Ion series, using a Li-ion battery rather than traditional sealed lead-acid batteries. Lithium-ion chemistry provides longer service life—typically 8–10 years—and faster recharge cycles. Recharge time is approximately 3 hours, allowing the UPS to return to operational readiness quickly after battery discharge events.

Management and monitoring capabilities are provided through APC SmartConnect remote monitoring, as well as USB and RJ-45 serial communication interfaces. These allow administrators to monitor UPS status, configure alerts, and integrate the device into centralized infrastructure monitoring platforms.

In practical deployments, the SCL500RM1UC is frequently used in short-depth network racks (~9-inch depth), wall-mount cabinets, telecom closets, and retail infrastructure racks. Its 1U rack height and shallow chassis allow installation in compact racks that cannot accommodate standard rackmount UPS systems.

However, this UPS is not intended for high-power server racks or virtualization hosts. With a maximum load capacity of 400W, it is best suited for lightweight rack infrastructure such as routers, small switches, firewalls, and edge appliances rather than multi-server environments.
