Overview :

The Eaton N785‑001‑LC‑MM is a Gigabit multimode fiber media converter that bridges copper Ethernet and multimode fiber links. It is deployed by network engineers and infrastructure technicians to extend Ethernet network segments beyond copper limitations by converting 10/100/1000Base‑T signals to multimode fiber optics with LC interfaces. This converter solves distance constraints where switches or endpoints are geographically separated within campuses, buildings, or industrial facilities.

It accepts a single RJ45 copper port and provides one LC duplex multimode fiber port operating at an 850 nm wavelength. The unit auto‑negotiates link speed and duplex settings on the copper side, supports MDI/MDI‑X auto‑crossover, and includes six LEDs for status and performance monitoring.

Typical installation is at network edges, intermediate distribution frames (IDFs), or equipment closets to extend connectivity up to 550 m (1 800 ft) over multimode fiber while maintaining Gigabit throughput. It is suited to campus wiring, industrial networks, and wiring closets interfacing fiber backbones with copper LAN segments.

The converter comes as a compact desktop unit with an external power supply that supports 100–240 VAC input and delivers 5 V DC to the media converter. Cable terminations are industry standard: RJ45 for copper and LC‑duplex for multimode fiber (50/125 µm up to 550 m; 62.5/125 µm up to ~400 m).

In practice, place the N785‑001‑LC‑MM adjacent to switches or routers where fiber emerges from backbone runs, and connect the copper port to end‑devices or short copper runs. It is not designed for outdoor harsh environments, high‑density aggregation layers, or carrier‑grade service links requiring industrial enclosures or redundant power. Use environmental hardened converters for such cases.
