Learn how VLANs, port security, ACLs and 802.1X on a managed switch protect a small business network, and which settings to turn on first.
A managed switch lets you control who connects to your network and where traffic can go. An unmanaged switch just passes traffic along. For a small business that stores customer data, takes card payments or runs cameras, that control matters.
A VLAN splits one physical switch into separate networks. Put guest Wi-Fi, office PCs, VoIP phones and cameras on different VLANs. If a camera or guest laptop is infected, it cannot reach your accounting PC.
Port security limits which MAC addresses can use a port. If someone unplugs a printer and plugs in a laptop, the port can shut down or send an alert.
ACLs allow or block traffic by IP address, protocol or port. Use them to stop printers from reaching the internet, or to let only the IT admin PC open the switch's management page.
802.1X forces a device or user to log in before the port passes traffic. It needs a RADIUS server, but it stops unknown devices from joining the wired network.
Change the default admin password, update the firmware, disable unused ports, create separate VLANs for guests and cameras, and turn on logging. These five steps cover most small office risks without needing a dedicated network engineer.
