What socket is the 14700K?

Posted on: Oct 9, 2026 | Author: Justin

The Core i7-14700K uses the LGA 1700 socket. See which Z790, B760 and Z690 motherboards fit, whether you need a BIOS update, and which coolers work.

The Intel Core i7-14700K uses the LGA 1700 socket. It is a Raptor Lake Refresh processor, and it fits the same socket as 12th gen Alder Lake and 13th gen Raptor Lake chips.

Compatible motherboard chipsets

Any LGA 1700 motherboard can physically hold the 14700K. The chipset decides which features you get.

  • Z790: full overclocking support, and most boards work with the 14700K out of the box.
  • Z690: works, but older boards may need a BIOS update before the CPU is recognized.
  • B760 and B660: work with the CPU, but memory overclocking is limited and the K chip's multiplier cannot be raised on most boards.
  • H770 and H610: compatible, with fewer lanes and fewer features.

Do you need a BIOS update?

Z790 boards sold after late 2023 usually ship with support. Older Z690 and B660 boards often need a newer BIOS first. Check the CPU support list on your board maker's page, and look for a BIOS Flashback button if you have no older CPU to boot with.

DDR4 or DDR5?

The 14700K supports both DDR4 and DDR5, but each motherboard supports only one type. Choose the board first, then buy matching memory. DDR5 boards give better memory speed for this chip.

Cooler compatibility

LGA 1700 has different mounting hole spacing from LGA 1200 and LGA 1151. Many older coolers will not fit without an LGA 1700 bracket. The 14700K draws up to 253 W at maximum turbo power, so use a strong air cooler or a 240 mm or larger liquid cooler.

Quick answer

Socket: LGA 1700. Cores: 20 (8 performance and 12 efficiency). Best match: a Z790 motherboard with DDR5.
