Cisco and Netgear small business routers differ in VPN throughput, firewall speed and reliability. See what to compare before you buy.
Both brands sell wired Gigabit routers with VPN and firewall features for small offices. The differences show up in throughput under load, VPN capacity, management tools and support.
Spec sheets often list raw routing speed. The number that matters is firewall and VPN throughput with features enabled. Cisco's small business routers and Netgear's ProSAFE and Insight models can drop well below their headline speed once deep inspection, IPsec or SSL VPN is active. Compare the datasheet figure for the feature you will actually use.
Cisco routers are known for stable site-to-site IPsec tunnels and support for many simultaneous tunnels. Netgear business routers handle VPN well for small teams, but tunnel counts are usually lower on entry models.
Cisco typically offers longer firmware support and a larger partner network. Netgear is often cheaper and easier to set up through the Insight app. Check the end-of-sale status of any Cisco RV series model before buying, because Cisco has been moving small business customers toward its Business and Meraki lines.
Netgear usually costs less at the entry level. Cisco costs more, and cloud-managed Meraki models add a licensing fee.
Always read the current datasheet for your exact model, since throughput figures change between versions.
