What TVs are good for outside?

Posted on: Oct 9, 2026 | Author: Justin

Not every TV can go outside. See which outdoor TVs handle sun, rain and heat, how bright they need to be, and what IP rating to look for.

The best TV for outside is one built for outdoor use. A regular indoor TV is not sealed against rain, dust, humidity or temperature swings, and using one outside can damage it and void the warranty.

What to look for

  • Weather rating: look for an IP rating such as IP55 or higher for dust and water protection.
  • Brightness: covered patios need about 700 to 1,000 nits. Full sun needs 1,500 to 2,000 nits or more.
  • Anti-glare screen: a matte or anti-reflective coating reduces reflections.
  • Temperature range: outdoor models handle both hot and freezing weather.
  • Sealed design: protects against insects, moisture and salt air if you live near the coast.
  • Audio: outdoor speakers or a soundbar rated for outdoor use.

Outdoor TV types

  • Full sun models: the brightest and the most expensive. Brands include SunBriteTV.
  • Partial sun models: for porches and covered patios with indirect light.
  • Shade models: cheapest, for deeply covered areas only.

Examples

SunBriteTV, Samsung The Terrace, Peerless-AV and Séura all sell outdoor-rated TVs. Compare the brightness and IP rating on each product page, as specifications change by model.

Can you use an indoor TV outside?

Only in a weatherproof enclosure or a fully protected space, and the manufacturer will usually not cover damage. For a permanent setup, buy an outdoor TV.

Quick tips

  • Mount it under a roof or eave, even if it is rated for rain.
  • Use outdoor-rated mounts and cables.
  • Place it away from direct afternoon sun when you can.
