What are the total costs involved in implementing Cisco switches for small businesses?

Posted on: Oct 12, 2026 | Author: Justin

Budget for Cisco switches beyond the sticker price: licenses, support, cabling, optics, installation, UPS and replacement. Use this cost checklist.

The price of the switch is only part of the cost. A realistic budget includes hardware, optional licenses and support, installation, cabling and the equipment that keeps the switch running. The ranges below are illustrative, so get quotes for your own setup.

Cost items

  • Switch hardware: depends on port count, PoE budget and uplinks. Cisco Business models cost more than many rivals.
  • Licenses: Cisco Business switches generally do not need a subscription, while Meraki and some Catalyst models do. Confirm for your model.
  • Support contract: optional on Cisco Business, and usually a yearly fee.
  • Optics and cables: SFP modules for fiber uplinks, patch cords and Ethernet cables.
  • Structured cabling: new cable runs cost per drop, including labor.
  • Installation and configuration: a few hours of IT time, more if you build VLANs and security rules.
  • UPS and rack or wall mount: protects the switch and holds it in place.
  • Training: time for staff to learn the interface.
  • Monitoring tools: free or paid.
  • Spare unit: a second switch for fast replacement.

Example for a 20-person office

  • One 24-port PoE managed switch.
  • Patch cables and a small wall rack.
  • A UPS for the switch.
  • About 4 hours of configuration time.
  • Optional support contract for five years.

Add the price of each item from your supplier, then divide the total by the five or more years you expect to use the switch.

Hidden costs to watch

  • Higher PoE budget than expected.
  • Firmware upgrade time.
  • Staff downtime during migration.
  • Replacement when the model reaches end of support.

Ask your reseller for a full quote with licensing and support terms spelled out.
