What is an APC backup?

Posted on: Oct 12, 2026 | Author: Justin

An APC backup is usually an APC battery backup (UPS) that keeps devices running in an outage. Learn what it protects, how long it lasts and how to choose.

An APC backup is almost always an APC battery backup, which is a UPS from APC. It supplies power from a battery when the wall power fails. The term can be confusing, because some people also use it to mean data backup. A UPS does not back up files.

Power backup, not data backup

  • APC power backup: keeps devices running for a short time during an outage.
  • Data backup: copies of files stored on drives or in the cloud. APC does not provide this on its battery products.

What an APC backup protects

  • Computers and monitors.
  • Routers, modems and Wi-Fi gear.
  • Network storage and small servers.
  • Home entertainment gear.

How it helps

  • Prevents sudden shutdowns that can damage files.
  • Gives you time to save and shut down.
  • Blocks surges.
  • Evens out voltage on many models.

How long it runs

Runtime depends on your load and the model. Light loads can run for an hour or more. A gaming PC may run for only a few minutes. APC publishes runtime charts for each model.

How to choose

  1. Add the watts of your devices.
  2. Add 25 percent headroom.
  3. Choose a model with a higher watt rating.
  4. Decide between Back-UPS for home and Smart-UPS for servers and network gear.

Pair a UPS with a real data backup plan so you are protected from both power loss and data loss.
