How to use a NOCO battery cleaner

Learn how to clean corroded battery terminals with a NOCO cleaner safely: what to wear, what order to disconnect cables, and how to protect terminals after.
NOCO makes battery terminal cleaning products, including cleaner sprays, brushes and terminal protectors. White, green or blue crust on a car battery is corrosion, and removing it restores a good electrical connection. Always follow the directions printed on your specific NOCO product, and use these steps as the general process.
What you need
- NOCO battery cleaner or terminal cleaning brush.
- Safety glasses and rubber gloves.
- A wrench that fits your terminal clamps.
- Clean rags or paper towels.
- Terminal protector spray or grease.
Steps
- Turn everything off. Switch off the engine, lights and accessories, and remove the key.
- Put on gloves and glasses. Battery corrosion contains sulfuric acid residue and can burn skin and eyes.
- Disconnect the negative cable first. Loosen the clamp on the negative (minus) terminal and lift it clear. Then disconnect the positive (plus) cable.
- Apply the cleaner. Spray or apply the NOCO cleaner on the corroded terminals and clamps. Let it work for the time on the label.
- Scrub. Use a terminal brush on the posts and the inside of each clamp until you see bare metal.
- Wipe clean. Remove residue with a rag. Use water only if the label says it is safe, and keep liquid away from the battery vents.
- Dry everything. Make sure posts and clamps are fully dry.
- Reconnect the positive cable first, then the negative, and tighten both so they do not move.
- Apply a terminal protector. A light coat on the posts and clamps slows new corrosion.
Baking soda alternative
A mix of baking soda and water also neutralizes battery acid. Brush it on, let it fizz, then wipe clean and dry.
Safety notes
Do not let a metal tool touch both terminals at once, since that can cause a short and sparks. Dispose of used rags properly and wash your hands after the job. If corrosion returns quickly, check for a leaking battery or a loose clamp, and test the battery.
