How to choose the right network switch for my business

Posted on: Oct 9, 2026 | Author: Justin

Choosing a business network switch? Compare port count, PoE budget, speed, managed vs unmanaged and warranty with this simple checklist.

The right switch has enough ports, enough power for your devices, and the management features your business needs. Work through these points in order.

1. Count your ports

Count every wired device: PCs, printers, phones, cameras and access points. Add 20 to 30 percent for growth, then round up to 8, 16, 24 or 48 ports.

2. Choose the speed

Gigabit ports suit most offices. Pick a switch with 10G uplinks if you have a server, a NAS or many users sharing one link. Check the switching capacity so the switch can handle all ports at full speed.

3. Decide if you need PoE

Power over Ethernet runs phones, cameras and Wi-Fi access points from the switch. Check the total PoE budget in watts, not just the number of PoE ports. Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 access points often need PoE+ or PoE++.

4. Managed, smart or unmanaged

  • Unmanaged: plug and play, no settings. Good for very small setups.
  • Smart (lite managed): basic VLANs and QoS through a web page. Good for small offices.
  • Managed: full control, security, monitoring and Layer 3 on some models. Good for growing businesses.

5. Layer 2 or Layer 3

Layer 2 switches move traffic within a network. Layer 3 switches also route between VLANs, which helps when you separate staff, guest and camera networks.

6. Check noise, warranty and support

Fanless models are silent for open offices. Look for firmware updates and a warranty of at least three years.

Quick picks

  • Up to 10 devices, no special needs: 8-port unmanaged Gigabit.
  • Office with phones and cameras: 24-port smart or managed PoE+.
  • Growing company with VLANs: managed Layer 2 or Layer 3 with 10G uplinks.
