What is the typical lifespan of a medium enterprise switch in a business environment?

Most enterprise switches last 5 to 10 years, but support ends sooner. Learn what shortens switch life and when to plan a refresh.

A medium enterprise switch usually runs for 5 to 10 years. Many companies plan a refresh at 5 to 7 years, even if the hardware still works, because support and speed needs change before the hardware dies.

Hardware life vs. support life

Hardware can keep working for a decade. The limit is usually vendor support. A vendor announces end of sale, and end of support follows, often about five years later. After that you get no security patches or replacement parts.

What fails first

  • Fans, which wear out and cause overheating.
  • Power supplies and electrolytic capacitors.
  • PoE circuits that carry heavy loads.
  • Individual ports.

MTBF figures on datasheets, often in the hundreds of thousands of hours, describe averages, not how long your unit will last.

What shortens switch life

  • Heat and poor ventilation in closets.
  • Dust.
  • Unstable power without a UPS.
  • Heavy PoE use.

Why businesses replace switches early

  • Moving from 1 Gbps to 2.5, 10 or 25 Gbps uplinks.
  • Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 access points needing more PoE power.
  • Security requirements that old firmware cannot meet.
  • No firmware updates after end of support.

How to plan

Record the purchase date and the vendor's end-of-sale date for every switch. Budget for replacement at about year 5 to 7, and keep one spare for critical locations.
