Overview 

The APC SMX1500RM2UC is a line-interactive rack/tower uninterruptible power supply designed to provide regulated backup power for servers, network infrastructure, and edge computing systems. It is typically deployed by IT engineers and infrastructure administrators who require reliable power protection and controlled shutdown capability for rack-mounted or tower-based equipment in branch offices, IDF/MDF racks, and small data center environments.

This UPS provides 1500VA / 1350W output capacity with pure sine wave output, ensuring compatibility with modern servers, storage appliances, and networking hardware using active-PFC power supplies. The line-interactive topology includes Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR), which corrects undervoltage and overvoltage conditions without switching to battery mode, reducing battery wear while maintaining stable output voltage. The system operates on 120V AC infrastructure and accepts an input voltage range of approximately 82–144V, using a NEMA 5-15P input connector.

The SMX1500RM2UC provides eight NEMA 5-15R battery-backup outlets, allowing multiple devices such as rack servers, network switches, or storage systems to be powered from a single UPS. The UPS also includes three switchable outlet groups, allowing administrators to prioritize critical loads or perform staged shutdown of connected equipment during extended outages.

For deployment flexibility, the unit supports rack or tower installation. It occupies 2U of rack space in a standard 19-inch rack but can also operate as a tower using included support feet. This allows the UPS to be deployed in traditional server racks, network cabinets, or standalone equipment setups where rack infrastructure may not be available.

The system integrates with the APC management ecosystem through USB and serial communication ports, along with a SmartSlot expansion interface for optional network management cards. These features enable remote monitoring, graceful shutdown of physical or virtual systems, and integration with centralized infrastructure monitoring platforms such as APC EcoStruxure IT.

In typical deployments, the SMX1500RM2UC protects virtualization hosts, NAS storage systems, and network switch stacks in branch offices or edge computing racks. At full load, the UPS provides roughly 5 minutes of runtime, while half-load runtime can reach approximately 14–15 minutes, allowing sufficient time for system shutdown or generator startup.

However, environments requiring multi-kilowatt loads or long runtime autonomy should use higher-capacity or modular UPS platforms rather than relying on a 1500VA unit.
