Overview 

The APC SMX1000C is a line-interactive rack/tower uninterruptible power supply (UPS) designed to provide regulated backup power for servers, network infrastructure, and edge computing systems. It is typically deployed by IT administrators and network engineers who require reliable power protection and controlled shutdown capability for rack-mounted or tower-based IT equipment.

The UPS provides 1000VA / 900W output capacity and delivers pure sine wave output, ensuring compatibility with modern servers and networking hardware using active-PFC power supplies. The line-interactive design incorporates Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR), which corrects voltage fluctuations without switching to battery operation. This reduces battery wear while maintaining stable output voltage for connected equipment.

The system operates in a 120V electrical ecosystem with an input voltage range of approximately 82–143V AC and connects using a NEMA 5-15P input plug. It provides eight NEMA 5-15R outlets, all supporting battery backup and surge protection, allowing multiple servers, switches, or storage appliances to be powered from a single UPS device.

The SMX1000C is designed as a rack/tower convertible UPS, allowing installation either in a standard 19-inch rack (2U) or as a freestanding tower using included support feet. This flexibility allows deployment in IDF racks, branch office server cabinets, and edge infrastructure where rack or tower configuration may vary.

For monitoring and integration, the UPS includes SmartConnect remote monitoring, along with USB and serial communication interfaces. A SmartSlot expansion port allows installation of optional network management cards for SNMP monitoring and centralized infrastructure management platforms such as APC EcoStruxure IT.

In practical deployments, the SMX1000C is frequently used in small server racks, network cabinets, and edge computing environments to support virtualization hosts, storage appliances, routers, and PoE switches. At full load (900W), the UPS typically provides around 8 minutes of runtime, while at half load runtime can exceed 20 minutes, allowing sufficient time for system shutdown or generator startup.

However, environments requiring high-density compute or multi-kilowatt loads should use higher-capacity UPS systems or modular power protection platforms rather than relying on this 1000VA unit.
