What is a switched PDU?

Posted on: Oct 12, 2026 | Author: Justin

A switched PDU lets you turn rack outlets on and off remotely over the network. See features, uses, types and how it differs from metered PDUs.

A switched PDU is a rack power distribution unit with a network connection that lets you turn individual outlets on and off remotely. It is the PDU type used when you need to restart frozen equipment without visiting the rack.

What it does

  • Turns outlets on, off or reboots them from a web page, command line or API.
  • Staggers outlet startup after a power loss to avoid a surge of current.
  • Schedules power on and off times.
  • Groups outlets so one action controls several devices.
  • Reports current and power use, at the unit level, and at the outlet level on some models.
  • Sends alerts when load or temperature crosses limits.

Switched vs other PDUs

  • Basic: distributes power with no monitoring.
  • Metered: shows load locally.
  • Monitored: reports power use over the network.
  • Switched: monitoring plus remote outlet control.
  • Switched with outlet metering: the most detailed type, with per-outlet control and measurement.

Common uses

  • Remote offices and edge sites.
  • Colocation racks.
  • Data centers.
  • Labs and test environments.
  • Network closets where trips are costly.

Things to check before buying

  • Voltage, current rating and outlet types.
  • Number of outlets.
  • Network features: SNMP, SSH, HTTPS and API support.
  • Security: strong authentication, role-based access and firmware updates.
  • Compatibility with your management tools.

Security tips

Change default passwords, use a management VLAN, disable unused protocols and limit who can switch outlets.

Well-known makers include APC, Raritan, Server Technology, Tripp Lite and CyberPower.
