How to use an APC UPS

Posted on: Oct 12, 2026 | Author: Justin

Set up an APC UPS in minutes: connect the battery, charge it, plug in devices to the right outlets, install software and run a self-test.

Setting up an APC UPS takes about 10 minutes, plus charging time. Steps vary slightly by model, so keep the quick start guide handy.

  1. Unpack and place it. Put the UPS on a flat, ventilated spot away from heat and water. Leave space around the vents.
  2. Connect the battery. Some models ship with the battery disconnected. Open the battery door or panel and push the battery connector together, then close the cover.
  3. Plug the UPS into a wall outlet. Use a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension cord.
  4. Charge the battery. Let it charge for 8 to 16 hours before relying on it. The unit works during charging, but with less runtime.
  5. Plug devices into the right outlets. Use the battery backup outlets for computers, monitors, modems and routers. Use the surge-only outlets for printers and other devices that do not need battery power.
  6. Turn it on. Press the power button. Most models beep once and show a green light or LCD.
  7. Connect to your computer (optional). Plug the USB cable into your PC so it can shut down automatically. Install PowerChute software or use the operating system's built-in UPS settings.
  8. Run a self-test. On many models, hold the power button for a few seconds or use the software to test the battery. You can also unplug the UPS from the wall to confirm devices stay on, then plug it back in.

Do not plug in

  • Laser printers.
  • Space heaters.
  • Hair dryers and microwave ovens.
  • Another UPS or a surge strip daisy-chained to the UPS.

Everyday tips

  • Check the status light or LCD now and then.
  • Run a self-test every few months.
  • Keep the vents clear and the unit cool.
  • Replace the battery every 3 to 5 years.

What the beeps mean

A beep every few seconds usually means the UPS is running on battery. A constant tone often signals an overload or a fault. Check the manual for your model's alarm table.
