Posted on: Oct 12, 2026 | Author: Justin

APC Smart-UPS is a line of battery backups for servers and network gear. Learn the SMT, SMC, SMX and SRT models, features and who should buy one.

The APC Smart-UPS is a line of uninterruptible power supplies for servers, network equipment, storage and other business devices. It is a step up from the home-oriented Back-UPS line, with pure sine wave output, replaceable batteries and management options.

Main features

  • Pure sine wave output: works with sensitive electronics and active PFC power supplies.
  • Voltage regulation: corrects high and low voltage without using the battery.
  • LCD display: shows load, runtime and status.
  • Hot-swappable battery: on many models, you can replace the battery without shutting down.
  • Management slot: a SmartSlot for a network management card, or built-in network features on some models.
  • Software: PowerChute for automatic shutdown and monitoring.
  • Rack and tower versions.

Common model families

  • SMT and SMC: line-interactive Smart-UPS in tower and rack forms. SMC is more compact.
  • SMX: extended runtime options.
  • SRT: online double conversion for critical equipment.
  • Lithium-ion Smart-UPS models: longer battery life and lighter weight.

Model names change over time, so confirm the current naming on APC's site.

Who should buy a Smart-UPS

  • Small business servers and NAS devices.
  • Network racks with switches and firewalls.
  • Home labs.
  • Point-of-sale systems.
  • Medical and lab devices if the model is listed for that use.

Smart-UPS vs Back-UPS

Back-UPS suits PCs, TVs and routers. Smart-UPS adds sine wave output, better management and longer service life, at a higher price.
