What are the best energy-efficient managed switches for small business environments?

Cut switch power use with Energy-Efficient Ethernet, fanless designs and PoE scheduling. See what to look for and which product lines support it.
The switch itself usually uses little power. A small 24-port Gigabit switch might draw 15 to 30 watts. PoE devices connected to it use much more. The best energy-efficient setup combines an efficient switch with smart PoE controls.
Features that save energy
- Energy-Efficient Ethernet (IEEE 802.3az): reduces power on idle links.
- Fanless design: no fan power and no noise.
- Auto power-down: turns off ports that have no link.
- Cable-length detection: lowers power on short cables.
- PoE scheduling: turns PoE off at night for cameras or phones that do not need power.
- Efficient power supplies: check for efficiency ratings.
Product lines that support these features
- Cisco Business 250 and 350 series.
- TP-Link Omada and JetStream managed switches, which advertise green Ethernet features.
- Netgear managed and smart managed switches.
- Zyxel and D-Link managed models.
- Ubiquiti UniFi switches.
Feature support differs by model, so confirm EEE and PoE scheduling on the datasheet.
Example savings
If a switch uses 15 W less than another, that saves 131 kWh a year (15 W × 8,760 hours). At $0.15 per kWh, that is about $20 a year. The bigger savings come from PoE: turning off a 60 W load for 12 hours a night saves about 263 kWh a year.
How to cut energy use further
- Buy only as many ports as you need.
- Choose the right PoE class instead of oversized PoE++ switches.
- Disable unused ports.
- Use a managed switch to schedule PoE.
If cost matters, compare the total power draw at your actual load, not just the maximum figure on the spec sheet.
