What size UPS do I need? Match your devices to the right VA and watt rating, compare 1000VA vs 1500VA and avoid costly sizing mistakes.
Match the UPS capacity to your connected equipment. Add up the watts, then choose a UPS with a watt rating at least 25% above that total.
| Setup | Suggested size |
|---|---|
| Modem and router | 450VA to 600VA |
| Network closet with a switch and NAS | 1000VA to 1500VA |
| Home office PC with a monitor | 900VA to 1500VA |
| Gaming PC | 1500VA, or more for high-end graphics cards |
A 1000VA UPS commonly supports about 500 to 600 watts. A 1500VA unit supports about 800 to 900 watts and usually gives longer battery runtime at the same load. If your total is near 400 watts or more, the 1500VA is the safer choice.
Use a sizing calculator, or read the load percentage on the UPS display. Keep it under 80% for reliable use. Headroom also helps the battery last as it ages.
Laser printers, space heaters, and other high-draw devices should stay off the battery outlets. Use the surge-only outlets for them or a separate surge protector.
A right-sized UPS gives you time to save work and shut down during a power outage, and surge protection helps shield your gear from damage.
