QLED vs OLED explained simply. Learn what a QLED TV is, how quantum dots work and whether it is the right pick for your room and budget.
QLED TV is an LED-backlit LCD television that uses a layer of quantum dots to make brighter, richer color. QLED stands for quantum dot light emitting diode. Samsung created the name, and brands such as TCL and Hisense also sell quantum dot TVs.
A backlight shines through a layer of quantum dots, which are tiny particles that glow a precise color. This gives wider color volume and stronger color accuracy at high brightness, which helps HDR content look vivid. Most QLED sets are 4K and run a smart TV system.
| Feature | QLED | OLED | Standard LED |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light source | LED backlight plus quantum dots | Each pixel makes its own light | LED backlight |
| Brightness | Very high | High | Medium |
| Black levels and contrast ratio | Good, better with local dimming | Excellent | Fair |
| Color | Vivid | Vivid and accurate | Basic |
| Viewing angle | Moderate | Wide | Narrow to moderate |
| Best for | Bright rooms | Dark rooms, movies | Budget buyers |
Higher-end sets such as Samsung Neo QLED use Mini LED backlights, which are many small lights with local dimming. This improves contrast and cuts blooming around bright objects.
QD-OLED is a different panel type. It combines OLED with quantum dots and is not the same as QLED.
