Overview

The APC AP7998B is a high‑capacity switched rack power distribution unit designed for remote control and managed power distribution in medium‑ to high‑density rack environments. Infrastructure and data center teams deploy this PDU where per‑outlet switching, sequencing, and monitoring improve operational workflows, enable controlled reboots of hung equipment, and support power management without physical rack access. Its switched architecture allows network‑based outlet control and status visibility.

Configured for 208 V AC three‑phase input with a maximum line current of 35 A, the AP7998B supports up to 12.5 kW (12,500 VA) of load capacity across a dense mix of 21 IEC 60320 C13 and 3 IEC 60320 C19 outlets that accommodate a wide variety of server, network, and storage power cords. The outlets are individually controllable and can be grouped or sequenced to help manage inrush currents and enforce orderly power‑up sequences for dependent systems.

The PDU uses a zero‑U vertical mount that installs alongside standard 19‑inch rack posts without consuming rack unit space, preserving valuable capacity for active equipment. A robust metal chassis and included accessories — such as mounting brackets, configuration cable, and tool‑less mounting kit — enable quick installation and secure placement in server rooms, IDF/MDF closets, colocation cabinets, and enterprise racks.

Management is provided through integrated network interfaces that support remote access, control, and monitoring via Web and SNMP interfaces. Configurable alarm thresholds help alert operators to potential overload conditions, and remote per‑outlet control simplifies troubleshooting and scheduled power transitions. While local metering and display support visual load checks, most management functions are accessed over the network.

This PDU does not provide battery backup or ride‑through capability and is not a UPS. For continuity through utility outages or power conditioning, it should be paired with upstream uninterruptible power systems. It is optimized for dense rack deployments where managed distribution and outlet control enhance uptime and operational efficiency.
