Overview

The QNAP QSW-M5216-1T-US is a high-performance, ultra-high-speed Layer 2 managed switch designed for small-to-medium enterprise (SME) backbones and high-speed storage networking. It features sixteen 25GbE SFP28 fiber ports and one 10GbE RJ45 port, providing a massive 820Gbps switching capacity. This switch is engineered to provide the high bandwidth required for virtualization, 4K/8K video production, and high-density backup environments.

Technically, the SFP28 ports are backward compatible with 10GbE SFP+ modules, allowing for a phased network upgrade from 10G to 25G. It solves the latency and bandwidth bottlenecks found in standard 10GbE networks by offering 2.5 times the throughput per port. The inclusion of a 10GBASE-T port ensures easy integration with existing copper-based servers or workstations without needing additional adapters.

Deployment is intended for server rooms or data centers as a distribution switch or top-of-rack (ToR) solution. It utilizes the QNAP Switch System (QSS), a web-based management interface that simplifies VLAN configuration, Link Aggregation (LACP), and bandwidth control. With its compact half-width rackmount design, two units can be mounted in a single 1U space, providing 32 ports of 25GbE in a minimal footprint.

Do not use this switch in unventilated cabinets; its high-speed fiber interfaces and internal processing power generate heat that requires active cooling via its four smart fans. Ensure that connected fiber cables and transceivers are SFP28 compliant to achieve the full 25Gbps line speed; using 10GbE SFP+ modules will limit that specific port's speed to 10Gbps.
