Overview

The Eaton 5S550 is a line-interactive uninterruptible power supply (UPS) designed to maintain power to connected devices during brief outages and to provide surge protection for networked electronics. It's deployed by IT engineers and facilities teams in environments where clean power and short-duration backup are needed to protect endpoints such as servers, network switches, workstations, and critical peripherals. This model addresses the operational risk posed by momentary brownouts and voltage fluctuations common in small IT closets and branch offices.

This UPS supports a 550 VA / 330 W power rating at 120 V nominal, delivering enough capacity for low-to-mid-density workloads such as single rack servers, network gear, or multiple desktop systems on a shared circuit. It uses sealed, lead-acid batteries internally and features eight NEMA 5-15R output receptacles to distribute protected power.

The 5S550 is a tower form factor designed for freestanding deployment in small racks or on equipment shelves. It is suitable for branch office infrastructure, retail IT racks, or media closets where zero/low downtime is desirable for orderly shutdowns during outages rather than extended runtime support.

Integration includes a USB HID communications port for UPS monitoring and safe shutdown sequencing via companion software. The unit operates in a line-interactive topology, regulating small voltage deviations without switching to battery, reducing wear on the internal battery system.

In real deployments, the 5S550 is used to protect endpoint systems that cannot tolerate sudden loss of power and require clean shutdown procedures. It is not intended to sustain long outages but to provide controlled power transition until proper shutdown or auxiliary power engagement. Runtime can vary significantly based on load; engineering teams typically validate supported load profiles during commissioning.

This UPS should not be used as the primary power source for large servers or high-density equipment. Its internal battery capacity and topology limit it to short-duration support and voltage conditioning in lighter environments.
