Compatibility and Installation
The ST8000NM0075 requires a compatible SAS host interface. Before purchasing, confirm that your server, storage array, RAID controller, or host bus adapter supports 3.5-inch SAS drives, 8TB capacity, and the 512e sector format.
Important interface distinction: This is a SAS drive, not a SATA drive. A standard SATA-only controller cannot operate it directly. Check the equipment manufacturer's compatibility list and ensure the system supports the drive's interface and capacity before installation.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the capacity of the Seagate ST8000NM0075?
The drive provides 8TB of storage capacity. The usable space displayed by an operating system may be lower because of differences in capacity calculation and formatting overhead.
2. Is the ST8000NM0075 a SATA or SAS hard drive?
It is a SAS hard drive with a 12Gb/s interface and dual-port connectivity. It should not be confused with SATA-based Exos models.
3. What are the spindle speed and cache size?
This model operates at 7200RPM and includes 256MB of cache.
4. What does the 512e sector format mean?
512e means the drive presents 512-byte logical sectors while using 4096-byte physical sectors. The host system and storage software must support this format.
5. Can this drive be installed in a desktop computer or NAS?
Only if the system supports SAS drives and the drive's capacity and sector format. Many consumer desktops and NAS devices provide SATA-only connectivity, so verify compatibility before purchase.
6. What does the 550TB-per-year workload rating mean?
The workload rating describes the manufacturer's intended annual data-transfer workload for the drive. It is a design rating, not a guarantee against failure or data loss.
