Overview

The EXTREME NETWORKS 25G-ER-SFP40KM is an enterprise-grade, ultra-long-haul 25 Gigabit Ethernet SFP28 optical transceiver designed for high-capacity core routing backbones, metropolitan area networks (MANs), and distributed enterprise backhaul loops. This hot-pluggable optical node addresses the distance boundaries of standard 25G infrastructure by extending reliable, line-rate signal propagation across long spans without mid-span signal amplification. It satisfies strict operational metrics for service providers and cloud data center interconnects (DCIs) moving heavy data volumes across isolated regional sites.

The structural assembly utilizes a standardized Small Form-factor Pluggable 25 (SFP28) chassis enclosing a high-performance 1310nm Distributed Feedback (DFB) laser transmitter paired alongside an integrated high-sensitivity avalanche photodiode (APD) receiver. Operating over a single duplex LC optical interface, the module maintains an aggregate data throughput of 25.78 Gbps over a maximum physical range of 40 kilometers. To guarantee system optimization and real-time monitoring, the module incorporates Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) telemetry via the standard 2-wire serial bus, enabling remote diagnostics of optical power levels, temperature fluxes, and supply voltages.

Tailored for permanent execution within high-speed infrastructure arrays, this transceiver interfaces natively with Extreme Networks hardware architectures, including the 5420, 5520, 5720, and X695 series switching nodes running Switch Engine or Fabric Engine. To prevent signal degradation and maintain link integrity across the 40-kilometer perimeter, network administrators must enable Forward Error Correction (FEC) on the host switch ports. Avoid deploying this long-range optic on short-distance patch cables within a localized rack space without physical optical attenuators, as the high-output 1310nm laser will oversaturate and permanently degrade the sensitive APD optical receiver elements.
