Overview

The APC SMX120BP is an external battery pack engineered to extend the runtime of compatible APC Smart-UPS X-Series uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). It is deployed by data center and IT infrastructure engineers to add scalable battery capacity where longer outage tolerance is required for critical server, storage, and networking equipment. Its design allows installation adjacent to or beneath a UPS in rack or tower orientation.

This unit contains sealed, maintenance-free lead-acid batteries arranged to deliver 120V DC at 1200 VAh, providing a large reservoir of stored energy that increases UPS runtime when utility power is lost. The external pack integrates with the UPS's intelligent battery management and precision charging systems, enabling battery health reporting and predictable discharge behavior without interrupting protected loads.

Mechanically, the SMX120BP occupies 4U of rack height in a standardized 19-inch enclosure, and it ships with rack mounting hardware for installation under a UPS or in a dedicated battery bank section of the rack. The convertible design supports both rackmount and tower deployments, giving flexibility for data center cabinets and small server rooms alike.

Battery modules inside the pack are hot-swappable and user-replaceable, minimizing mean time to repair (MTTR) during maintenance cycles while maintaining continuous runtime availability. The design supports chaining of multiple battery packs to further scale runtime.

This battery pack is not a UPS itself; it does not provide AC output or surge protection on its own. It must be paired with a compatible Smart-UPS X model to deliver runtime extension.
