Overview

The Eaton 9SXEBM96 is an extended battery module (EBM) designed to expand runtime on compatible Eaton 9SX UPS systems by adding additional battery capacity beyond the UPS’s internal bank. IT engineers and facilities teams deploy this module when load hold‑up time needs to extend beyond the internal battery’s capability to bridge to auxiliary generator start, complete scheduled shutdowns, or sustain critical edge infrastructure during prolonged outages. It does not alter the UPS’s power output rating; its sole function is extending available backup duration.

This EBM integrates with Eaton 9SX UPS units such as 9SX2000, 9SX2000G, 9SX3000, 9SX3000G, 9SX3000GL, and 9SX3000HW. Connection is made via an OEM EBM connector cable supplied with the module, allowing the UPS to draw supplemental energy from the external battery string. Multiple EBMs can be connected in series up to the supported maximum to scale runtime.

The unit is engineered for tower free‑standing placement, enabling deployment on equipment room floors or shelves adjacent to the UPS. It complements on‑line or line‑interactive UPS architectures where additional runtime is needed without re‑architecting existing UPS placement or rack space.

Integration with UPS management remains transparent to the host UPS; runtime management and battery health monitoring occur through the UPS’s standard communications interfaces (USB, RS‑232, network card) once the EBM is connected. This ensures coordinated alarm and shutdown behavior across extended battery packs.

In practice, this module is deployed when measured runtime with internal batteries proves insufficient for scheduled maintenance windows, generator handovers, or extended power events. It should not be used as a substitute for higher‑capacity UPS systems where additional power capacity (VA/W) is required; in those cases, higher‑rating UPS families or redundant UPS configurations are appropriate.
