Overview

The QNAP TL-R1200PES-RP-US is an enterprise-class 12-bay 2U rackmount JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) expansion unit designed to provide massive storage scaling for QNAP QuTS hero and QTS NAS systems. Unlike standard expansion units that rely on SATA or USB interfaces, the TL-R1200PES-RP utilizes high-speed PCIe Gen 3 x8 connectivity, delivering up to 64Gb/s transfer speeds—roughly 10 times faster than a single SATA lane.

This unit is technically engineered to solve the bandwidth bottlenecks associated with petabyte-scale storage. It is intended for high-performance applications such as raw 4K/8K video post-production, large-scale virtualization, and high-density surveillance archives. By connecting to a host NAS via a QXP PCIe expansion card and dedicated SFF-8644 cables, it allows the host system to treat the remote drives as if they were internal, supporting native RAID management and health monitoring.

The "RP" designation indicates the inclusion of dual 300W redundant power supplies, ensuring the expansion unit remains online even in the event of a PSU failure. This level of redundancy, combined with the extreme throughput of the PCIe interface, makes it a critical component for mission-critical business continuity and high-availability data architectures.

Do not attempt to use this expansion unit with a NAS that does not have an available PCIe slot for the required QXP interface card. To ensure the rated 64Gb/s throughput, ensure that the SFF-8644 cables are properly seated and that the host NAS is running the latest version of QuTS hero or QTS for optimal drive recognition.
