The EXTREME NETWORKS 5420F-24S-4XE is an enterprise-grade universal edge and fiber access switch engineered for high-security campus networks, distributed multi-site organizations, and high-density optical aggregation layers. This modern hardware platform features a dual-persona architecture that lets administrators choose and boot either Switch Engine (EXOS) or Fabric Engine (VOSS) operating environments upon deployment. It eliminates hardware-enforced vendor lock-in, providing complete flexibility when integrating the switch into an automated Ethernet Fabric layout or a traditional routed edge design.

The physical architecture centers on a 1RU fixed chassis populated with 24 unpopulated 100/1000Base-X SFP fiber ports, making it an ideal choice for localized fiber-to-the-desk configurations, secure long-distance terminal connections, and intermediate distribution frames. For high-speed upstream connectivity, the front panel features 4 built-in 1/10Gb SFP+ uplink ports. The system is designed with a fixed primary 150W AC power supply and fixed internal fan arrays, but it includes an open unpopulated power slot that accommodates a secondary, field-replaceable power module (XN-ACPWR-150W) for active hardware power redundancy.

Designed for automated provisioning and orchestration, the switch interfaces seamlessly with ExtremeCloud IQ out of the box, supporting zero-touch deployment and central cloud lifecycle management. Hardware-enforced IEEE 802.1AE MACsec encryption capabilities are embedded directly across both the 24 SFP access ports and the 4 SFP+ uplinks, safeguarding point-to-point physical links against active wiretapping without reducing line-rate forwarding performance.
